Class in session...

I have noticed an atypical increase in traffic to my humble little corner of the web. So class, why should a sovereign state, allied with other sovereign states, forgo real output with the sole intention of perpetuating the alliance?

Perhaps to avoid wars? If the Germans don't want a replay of WW2 or something.
